Ketamine Therapy for
Bipolar Depression

Ketamine therapy is an innovative treatment for bipolar depression, particularly for individuals who have not responded adequately to conventional approaches. By enhancing neuroplasticity, ketamine helps strengthen neural connections involved in emotional processing and mood regulation while providing rapid relief from depressive symptoms.

Understanding Bipolar Depression

What is bipolar depression and how is it treated?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. While manic or hypomanic episodes are a defining feature of the disorder, many individuals spend far more time struggling with its depressive symptoms, including sadness, low energy, loss of interest, and difficulty functioning.

Around 7 million individuals struggle with bipolar disorder in the U.S. alone. Traditional treatment usually involves medications such as mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and antidepressants. These medications are not always effective and can sometimes cause unwanted side effects.

The science

How ketamine treats bipolar depression

“For many patients, relief begins within hours of their first session — not weeks.”

Most antidepressants work by slowly adjusting serotonin over weeks.

Ketamine works differently.
It targets glutamate, the brain’s most abundant neurotransmitter.
By increasing glutamate activity, ketamine enhances communication between brain cells in mood-related circuits.
Ketamine also promotes neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form and strengthen new neural connections. Because chronic stress and depression can weaken these connections, the “rewiring” can support lasting healing.

Research to better understand these mechanisms is ongoing.
Clinical studies have demonstrated ketamine’s effectiveness, particularly for individuals with treatment-resistant depression.

Research on ketamine therapy & bipolar depression

Below are several studies about the effectiveness of ketamine and the ketamine derivative esketamine (Spravato) in treating depression. Ketamine therapy is a subject of ongoing research and is frequently covered in both mainstream media and scientific journals.

FAQs

Keta Medical Center offers Intravenous Ketamine Infusions.

As a physician-led mental health clinic, all sessions are supervised by trained clinicians to manage safety, dosing, and overall comfort. We also offer Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) and integrated psychiatric care to deliver an integrated treatment plan tailored to individual needs.

Yes. At Keta Medical Center, patients are encouraged to work with their existing mental health providers and our lead doctor will call your psychiatrist, psychologist and therapist to coordinate your care. Our medical team reviews your medical and psychiatric history during the initial consultation to determine the best treatment plan tailored to your needs. Partnering with therapists and other clinicians is a great way to ensure that ketamine treatment is paired with your ongoing mental health support — helping you integrate ketamine’s effects with therapy and other management strategies.

A good candidate for ketamine therapy for bipolar depression is someone experiencing persistent depressive episodes that have not responded well to oral medications or whose improvement has plateaued.

Individuals who may benefit include:

  • Patients with treatment-resistant bipolar depression who have tried multiple mood stabilizers, antidepressants or therapy without sufficient improvement
  • Those whose depressive symptoms significantly impact daily functioning, energy, or quality of life
  • Individuals who cannot tolerate the side effects of traditional bipolar depression medications
Most bipolar patients continue their prescribed mood stabilizers during ketamine treatment, but it requires clinical review. Lamotrigine (Lamictal) – Generally considered compatible with ketamine. Some studies suggest it may slightly reduce ketamine’s intensity, but it does not appear to interfere with its antidepressant benefits. Most patients continue Lamotrigine during treatment. Lithium – Usually safe to continue, but clinicians monitor carefully because Lithium can affect blood pressure, kidney function, and sedation levels, all of which are important during ketamine therapy. Dose levels and recent lab work may need to be reviewed before starting treatment.

Insurance coverage for bipolar depression depends on the type of ketamine treatment you receive:

IV Ketamine is considered an off-label treatment, so most insurance plans do not cover it. At Keta Medical Center, IV ketamine is typically an out-of-pocket service, and prior authorization is generally not available. Superbills for patients to submit to insurance providers are available upon request.

As with any mood-affecting treatment, there is a potential risk of triggering a manic or hypomanic episode in individuals with bipolar disorder. At Keta Medical Center, all patients undergo a thorough psychiatric evaluation before treatment begins, and every session is supervised on-site by a physician.
