Throughout my years of experience in healthcare working with diverse populations, I’ve come to deeply understand the importance of embracing inclusivity. My mission is to advocate for patients who often face barriers navigating our complex healthcare systems. As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ and Latino communities, I bring my lived experiences to the forefront of my work. My goal is to provide inclusive, affirming, and accessible care for everyone who walks through our doors.

I’ve personally been inspired by the embracing and inclusive culture that Keta Medical Center has created. A space where patients feel safe to show up as their full selves and begin their healing journey with support and dignity by a staff who honors their patients’ individuality. Inclusive healthcare settings are deeply important to me because I’ve seen firsthand how being truly seen, respected, and affirmed can make all the difference in someone’s mental health and healing.

As someone who understands the direct needs of the community, not just as a healthcare professional, I’m proud to be part of a space that actively works to break down the bias and stigma that LGBTQ+ individuals too often face in healthcare, like being misgendered, dismissed, or not taken seriously when sharing their mental health concerns. At Keta Medical Center, we honor each person’s lived experience and lead with compassion from the first interaction to ongoing care.

LGBTQ+ Mental Health: What the Data Shows

LGBTQ+ adults are twice as likely to experience depression and anxiety compared to the general population. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

Nearly 1 in 3 report having experienced discrimination from a healthcare provider.
Center for American Progress, 2020

75% of LGBTQ+ youth report experiencing symptoms of anxiety; 58% report symptoms of depression The Trevor Project, 2023 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health

LGBTQ+ people of color face compounded challenges, with higher rates of discrimination, economic instability, and barriers to care. Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law

Our Allyship and Commitment to Creating a Safe Space for LGBTQ+ Healing

This Pride Month, and every day of the year, myself and the entire Keta Medical team proudly stand in allyship with the LGBTQ+ community and remain dedicated to celebrating and supporting each person’s unique journey. We believe that true healing begins with feeling safe, seen, respected and supported. That’s why we’re committed to fostering an inclusive, affirming space for everyone. Pride is a time to embrace the beauty in our diversity while also speaking truth to the ongoing challenges the LGBTQ+ community continues to face.

We’re dedicated and remain committed to offering care that’s inclusive and affirming of all identities. Our goal is to create a space where LGBTQ+ individuals feel genuinely seen, safe, and supported, free from fear or judgment. This means:

Using inclusive and affirming language

Every patient deserves to be addressed by their correct name and pronouns. We honor your identity and do our best to ensure our entire team reflects that respect in both language and action.

Reflecting Our Values in Who We Are

We intentionally build a compassionate, culturally aware team that reflects the diverse communities we serve and is deeply mindful and supportive of the mental health needs of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Offering personalized care

We recognize that every healing journey is unique. Our treatments, including ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP), are tailored to the individual, taking into account personal history, lived experiences, and goals.

We collaborate with LGBTQ+ organizations and refer patients to affirming providers when needed.

The Role of Ketamine Treatments in Supporting LGBTQ+ Mental Health

LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD, often due to chronic stress, discrimination, and lack of affirming care. Ketamine therapy, whether in the form of intravenous (IV) infusions or Spravato nasal spray, is a unique and effective way to address a variety of mental health conditions, especially when other therapies have failed.

At Keta Medical Center, we’ve seen how our care can support emotional healing, bring relief from symptoms, and help patients feel more connected to themselves in a safe, welcoming environment.

Our team has seen firsthand how impactful this care can be. One patient shared,

“The medical and nursing professionals provide excellent care and understanding. Their nonjudgmental interactions and conversations have been a pleasure. They have demonstrated concern, care, and compassion in almost every one of my visits.”

When patients are given the space to heal on their terms, the results are transformational.

The Power of Support: How Families and Friends Can Uplift LGBTQ+ Mental Health

Many family and friends may not be familiar with how ketamine is used for mental health treatment, but their support can be deeply impactful, especially for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Ketamine sessions often stir up emotional material, and having someone offer gentle and affirming support can help patients feel safe and grounded. Even simple words like “You are loved” or “I’m proud of you” can make a meaningful difference.

One of our Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapists, Stacey Blume Frankel, LMSW, shares more on how loved ones can be a source of strength. Read her latest blog article here.

At Keta, We Support Your Journey Toward Healing

We see you. We empower those left behind by traditional treatments to finally find relief and reconnect with the joy of living fully. We know the strength it takes to reach out, especially when you’re navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, or just feeling stuck. With compassionate care, affirming support, and transformative treatments like ketamine therapy, we walk with you at your pace, without judgment. This community has faced so much and continues to rise with incredible strength. We’re proud to be here with you.

Contact us to learn how we can support your journey.

This article appeared in Tap Into Westfield. Patient Lori shared her experience at Keta Medical Center.

Lori, a 72-year-old retiree from Fair Lawn, NJ, has weathered a lifetime of emotional struggles. Diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression, she spent most of her adult life searching for treatments that could bring relief.

“I was probably a depressed kid,” she said. “But back then, I just thought that’s how life was.”

First diagnosed with depression in her mid-20s, Lori spent the decades that followed trying to manage her condition through therapy and a multitude of medications. Some treatments offered periods of relief, followed by setbacks. One medication in particular caused unbearable side effects, leading to a traumatic episode that left her deeply distrustful of her medical caretakers.

About four years ago, she started treatment with Spravato, a nasal spray form of a drug called ketamine that’s approved by the FDA to alleviate treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine targets brain chemicals differently than traditional antidepressants and can provide rapid relief when nothing else works.

After a lifetime of suffering, ketamine greatly helped Lori with her depression. But she felt uneasy with the clinic’s inconsistent care and lack of support. “Sometimes the doctor wasn’t even there during the treatment. Once during a session I suddenly got very scared, and no one knew what to do.”

Everything changed when Lori transferred to a clinic called Keta Medical Center.

“Everyone there was wonderful. Dina, this one nurse, was like my angel,” Lori said. “She told me, ‘You need to prime yourself, get yourself in a calm head before the treatment.’ Because when you’re doing this, you get kind of trippy. No one had explained these things to me before.”

Until then, Lori would bring psychological thrillers to read during her sessions, books she loved, but that could trigger disturbing thoughts. Now, she knows to bring lighter reading, and she tucks baby pictures of her daughter inside the book. “Spravato is really bitter and can make you nauseous. Dina gave me chocolate kisses, so after each dose I have something sweet. All these small things matter so much.”

Most importantly, there was always a doctor on-site at the new clinic, ready to help if needed. After one intense session, a physician Lori particularly connected with helped her calm down and made sure to follow up and see how she was doing the next day.

Today, Lori enjoys volunteering regularly, connects more easily with her loved ones, and feels better equipped to manage her health.

“I’m not euphoric,” she said, “but I’m definitely much happier.” To others struggling with persistent depression, Lori has a simple message: “I’d say try ketamine treatment. You have nothing to lose, only to gain.”

Keta Medical Center, where Lori is being treated, recently opened a new clinic in Westfield, NJ. The newest location provides a physician-led, evidence-based approach to ketamine therapy for individuals in Central New Jersey who are living with depression, anxiety, PTSD and other mental health conditions. By combining the innovative treatment with personalized support and close coordination with patients’ existing providers, Keta Medical Center offers something many people have long been searching for: A path to healing and lasting relief.

Showing Up When It Matters Most: Supporting Our New York Nurses Amidst the Strike

At Keta Medical Center, we believe patient-centered care isn’t just a buzzword but a commitment to show up in real moments of uncertainty.

Many of our patients are caregivers themselves, some of whom are nurses impacted by the recent New York nursing strike.

Some of these workers may suddenly face disruptions to their health insurance coverage, and with that disruption can come anxiety, stress, and a very real fear: will I be able to continue my treatment when I need it most?

That is why Keta Medical Center is working with any impacted patients to ensure they can continue care during the strike, including working to address any gaps in coverage for both ketamine treatment and supportive care such as therapy and psychiatric care.

We’re not Leaving Our Patients Behind

Nurses dedicate their lives to caring for others, and are often working under immense pressure, which is why we believe it is our duty to support them when they need care themselves.

Ketamine therapy provides relief for those struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD and other mental health conditions. It is most effective when delivered safely and consistently within a medically supervised environment. Disruptions in care can undermine progress, particularly for individuals managing treatment-resistant mental health conditions.

At moments like this, our focus is squarely on providing reassurance and continuity of care.

A Commitment to Continuity, Safety, and Patient-Centered Care

Patient-centered care is often discussed in terms of logistics such as verifying insurance, following evidence-based protocols and maintaining high clinical standards. While these are essential, truly patient-centered mental health care goes deeper. It means showing up for patients despite the circumstances. We recognize that the world beyond our clinic doors plays a huge role in our patients’ progress and takes into consideration pressures related to work, finances and everyday life that can compound existing mental health concerns.

This moment is a real-world example of what patient-centered care looks like in practice. When our patients need us more, we don’t step back. We step in.

If you are an existing Keta Medical Center patient impacted by the New York nursing strike and have questions about coverage or next steps, our team is here to support you.

Diagnosed by TikTok? The Mental Health Risks You Need to Know About

It’s hard to scroll through TikTok these days without stumbling on a video about mental health. From depression checklists to ADHD self-testing challenges to creators sharing their personal trauma journeys: Social media, and particularly TikTok, has become a mental health counseling hub for Gen Z.

The TikTok therapy trend is not all bad. It has helped to destigmatize mental illness and created supportive online communities for teen mental health. But it’s also fueling a surge of self-diagnosis, misinformation, and even harmful advice. And it’s leaving many young people confused, anxious, and above all, over-relying on reels rather than seeking the professional care they might truly need.

At Keta Medical Center, we applaud the growing conversation about mental health. But we also know: hashtags aren’t healthcare. Here’s what you, and your teens or young patients, need to know about the advent of TikTok therapy and why professional, individualized care is what matters most.

The Allure of “Relatable” Mental Health Content

For many young people, TikTok has become a go-to gateway into the world of mental health. A study from 2024 found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional services were disrupted, youth in Canada used TikTok as an “easy way to access mental health information,” helping them feel seen and connected to others going through similar struggles. Many tried coping techniques they learned online and began conversations with friends and family they may not have otherwise initiated.

That kind of accessibility and relatability can be powerful. In fact, in 2023, over 100 billion views had accumulated under the hashtag #MentalHealth, showing just how pervasive and engaging conversations about mental health become. But with that growing awareness came a flood of inaccurate, misleading and even dangerous content on an extremely critical subject.

The Blurry Line Between Awareness and Mental Health Misinformation

The quality of TikTok’s mental health advice is highly inconsistent, and often wrong. A Guardian investigation analyzing the top 100 clips tagged #mentalhealthtips found that more than half contained some form of misinformation. It ranged from misleading oversimplification to outright incorrect, harmful claims. These included presenting everyday emotions as signs of serious mental illness, promoting unproven supplements to treat anxiety, depression or other mental health disorders, and offering trauma healing in an hour.

Similarly, a 2025 study analyzed 1,000 mental health-related TikToks from 16 countries and found that misinformation was particularly common in videos about neurodevelopmental disorders, suicide, psychotic disorders, and treatment. Videos directed at a general audience rather than a specific, informed group were more likely to mislead than those by licensed professionals.

These trends can trivialize the real and often complex experiences of those living with serious mental illness. It may actually heighten misconceptions about mental health disorders and pathologize normal human emotions. And the social media environment can leave vulnerable users feeling even more isolated or helpless if the advice doesn’t work for them, or even intensifies existing conditions.

Why Self-Diagnosis Falls Short

Self-diagnosis may feel validating in the moment, but it’s very clearly no substitute for a clinical evaluation. Watch out for creators who aren’t transparent about their qualifications, posts that market products in the disguise of mental health advice, and content that promotes self-diagnosis based on superficial criteria.

Only a trained professional can tell whether what you’re feeling is part of life’s ups and downs or a sign of something more serious. Without an accurate diagnosis by a licensed medical expert, you risk misinterpreting normal stress responses as disorders, or either missing serious conditions that require prompt, appropriate care.

How to Talk to Gen Z About TikTok Therapy

As parents, caregivers, and clinicians, you don’t have to dismiss social media entirely. But it’s important to raise awareness so that young people make the distinction between relatable stories and medical facts. Here are some ways to start:

Ask what accounts and hashtags they follow, and talk about the difference between personal experience and evidence-based treatment.

Encourage them to check a creator’s credentials.

Remind them that therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and that online advice may not apply to their unique circumstances.

Offer reassurance: Seeking professional care may feel intimidating or unnecessary, even if they’ve learned a lot from TikTok. But it’s often the most important step toward real, lasting improvement.

It’s also vital to equip young people with media literacy skills, so they can better assess the credibility of what they see online.

Source: National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

Nearly 1 in 3 report having experienced discrimination from a healthcare provider.

Source: Center for American Progress, 2020

75% of LGBTQ+ youth report experiencing symptoms of anxiety; 58% report symptoms of depression.

Source: The Trevor Project, 2023 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health

LGBTQ+ people of color face compounded challenges, with higher rates of discrimination, economic instability, and barriers to care.

Source: Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law

Dear Patients,

At Keta Medical Center, we are committed to providing safe, medically supervised ketamine treatments that offer hope and healing for individuals struggling with depression, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.

Recently, media coverage surrounding Elon Musk’s ketamine use has sparked widespread discussions about this therapy—unfortunately, with many misconceptions and misunderstandings.

We want to take a moment to clarify key points and reinforce the importance of receiving ketamine therapy in a professional medical setting.

Medical Supervision is Essential

One of the most concerning aspects of the recent media discourse is the implication that ketamine use is a casual or recreational activity. While Musk has openly discussed using ketamine to manage his mental health, it is important for everyone to consider and prioritize the crucial role of proper medical oversight. Ketamine is a powerful medication with therapeutic benefits, but it must be administered in a controlled environment under the supervision of trained medical professionals.

At Keta Medical Center, we follow strict protocols to ensure patient safety. Every treatment is carefully monitored by a physician, with personalized dosing tailored to each patient’s needs. Unlike unregulated or unsupervised use, clinical ketamine therapy is guided by medical research and evidence-based protocols.

Additionally, we recognize that ketamine therapy is most effective when combined with talk therapy. Our clinic offers integrative mental health care, pairing ketamine treatments with professional therapy sessions to help patients process their experiences and achieve long-term benefits. This comprehensive approach ensures that ketamine is not just a temporary relief but a transformative part of a broader mental health strategy.

Dosing and Context Matter

Many headlines have focused on Musk’s ketamine use without addressing the significant difference between supervised clinical treatment and personal, unmonitored use. In a clinical setting, ketamine is administered in carefully measured doses that can induce transient dissociation monitored by a doctor and a nurse. The goal is therapeutic relief, not intoxication.

Ketamine has been shown to be 70% effective in treating treatment-resistant depression, often providing rapid relief within hours by acting on the brain’s glutamate system rather than serotonin. It enhances neuroplasticity, ‘rewiring’ neural pathways to promote long-term resilience. Studies show its benefits can be sustained for years with proper maintenance, particularly when combined with psychotherapy and lifestyle interventions.

Recent press has raised concerns about ketamine’s effects on cognition. While excessive use can impact productivity, controlled medical treatment has been shown to improve cognitive function by restoring neural connectivity. Short-term effects, such as mild dissociation, wear off within hours, and long-term monitored use does not impair cognition. When used improperly or in excessive amounts outside of a medical setting, ketamine can pose risks. That’s why we emphasize the importance of professional assessment, structured treatment plans, and follow-up care to ensure both safety and effectiveness.

Ketamine Therapy is a Legitimate Mental Health Treatment

Despite the tone of some media reports, ketamine therapy is not a fringe or experimental treatment—it is a well-researched, FDA-approved approach to mental health care when administered in appropriate medical contexts. Clinical studies have demonstrated ketamine’s ability to provide rapid relief for treatment-resistant depression, and it has been increasingly recognized as a breakthrough therapy for individuals who have not responded to traditional medications.

Our Commitment to Safe, Effective Treatment

We take our responsibility to our patients seriously. Our mission is to provide safe, compassionate, and scientifically backed ketamine therapy in a monitored, supportive environment. We encourage anyone considering this treatment to seek out reputable medical professionals and avoid unregulated or at-home use.

If you have any questions or concerns about ketamine therapy, we’re here to help.

Sincerely,
Dr. Haviva Malina & Dr. Cheryl Malina
Medical Directors and Founders, Keta Medical Center

Dear Patients,

Every day, at Keta Medical Center, we are committed to safely and effectively helping our patients achieve emotional relief with ketamine treatments. We are inspired by the incredible courage our patients show in their battles against depression and wanted to take a moment to address concerns and provide clarification about the recent updates regarding actor Matthew Perry’s tragic and preventable death.

The setting matters: As physicians, we are deeply troubled to learn of the role that Perry’s own doctors had in giving him access to large amounts of ketamine to take at home, unsupervised, simply because of their own greed. Perry drowned after taking ketamine at home with no medical professional present. These events underscore the importance of administering ketamine in a professional, medically-supervised setting.

The dosage matters: At the time of his death, Mr. Perry had ketamine levels in his system that were 18-24 times higher than those used for appropriate treatment of depression. His last clinical treatment occurred two weeks prior to his death and any residual medicine from that visit would have left his body within hours of this treatment.

At Keta Medical Center, we believe that the safety and efficacy of ketamine therapy hinge on careful, professional oversight. We are one of the only ketamine clinics in the tri-state area with a physician on site during every patient treatment. For us, this is part of our founding promise to our patients. Our protocols are designed to ensure that every patient receives treatment in a controlled environment, with highly trained medical professionals present to monitor and support them throughout the process. This approach not only maximizes the therapeutic potential of ketamine but also minimizes any potential risks.

We urge you to prioritize your safety by always seeking treatment in a clinical setting with experienced practitioners. Ketamine therapy, when done correctly, can offer significant benefits—but it must be approached with the utmost care and responsibility. We are here to support you and ensure that your treatment is both safe and effective.

Sincerely,
Dr. Haviva Malina & Dr. Cheryl Malina
Medical Directors and Founders, Keta Medical Center
