Spravato® Ketamine Treatment for Depression

Experience rapid relief with a simple ketamine nasal spray.

What Is Spravato?

Spravato® nasal spray is a groundbreaking therapy that can provide rapid relief from severe depression using a ketamine derivative called esketamine.

In 2019, Spravato was approved by the FDA to provide relief for those suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

The Benefits of Spravato

Rapid relief: With Spravato treatments, many patients experience a significant improvement in symptoms within days or even hours, compared to the weeks or months required by traditional antidepressants.
Simple and noninvasive: Spravato is administered as a nasal spray, with no need for needles or an IV. Sit back, listen to music and let the medicine take effect.
A different approach: Because Spravato for depression affects your brain differently than traditional medication, it can be very effective where other treatments have failed.
Insurance covered: For those diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression, Spravato is covered by insurance.

Who Can Be Treated With Spravato?

Spravato is specifically designed for individuals suffering from:

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with suicidal ideation

If you suffer from severe depressive episodes with suicidal thoughts, Spravato can offer effective symptom relief.

Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)

If you’ve tried two or more antidepressant treatments without success, Spravato may be the solution you’ve been looking for.

How Does Spravato Work?

Spravato works by targeting different chemicals in the brain than conventional antidepressants do.

Antidepressants increase levels of chemical messengers like dopamine and serotonin, which regulate mood. Spravato, on the other hand, increases a mood-enhancing neurotransmitter called glutamate, which in turn affects neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to form new neural pathways and “rewire.”

The Spravato Treatment Process

Spravato is administered as a nasal spray under the supervision of a physician.
Treatment Frequency

Spravato is administered twice a week for the first 4 weeks. These first 8 sessions are known as the induction phase.

During your sessions
Each session lasts 2 hours. We invite you to put on your eye mask, listen to music and just let go. You’ll be closely monitored by the physicians on site to ensure your safety and well-being.
Ongoing care

After the induction phase, weekly treatments are recommended for 4 weeks, followed by periodic maintenance sessions needed. We’ll create a personalized schedule together with you and your mental health care provider.

Insurance Coverage for Spravato

If you are diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression and meet the following criteria, then insurance may cover your Spravato treatment if:

  • You are currently taking an oral antidepressant.
  • You have previously tried 2 antidepressants, without success.

We want to make things easy for you.

Our administrative team will review your insurance information to see if you are covered. If you’re eligible, we’ll take care of the entire approval process following your initial consultation. All you have to do is give us a call.

Spravato vs. IV Ketamine Therapy

IV Ketamine and Spravato differ in delivery, session frequency and affordability.  Both are clinically proven to help treat mental health conditions including treatment resistant depression.

FAQs

Many patients report improvement in their symptoms within hours of their first session. The response varies by individual, but rapid relief is a key benefit of ketamine therapy, especially for those with treatment-resistant conditions. Studies show that 70% of people respond to the treatment and 52% of patients achieved full remission of their depression symptoms after four weeks of treatment.

The side effects of Spravato can include mild nausea, dizziness, feelings of dissociation, anxiety or increased blood pressure. These typically resolve shortly after the treatment session. Our medical team monitors patients closely to manage any side effects effectively.
If you take Spravato as prescribed and in a professional medical setting, it is safe to use. Patients with a history of uncontrolled hypertension, brain mass or bleed may not be appropriate candidates for ketamine treatment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult with your physician.
