PRISM for PTSD
What is PRISM?
PRISM is an FDA-cleared, noninvasive therapy for PTSD developed by GrayMatters Health. Using real-time brainwave monitoring and neurofeedback, it helps patients regulate the brain’s stress response by training activity in the amygdala. PRISM harnesses the brain’s natural ability to adapt, empowering individuals to manage PTSD symptoms without medication or invasive procedures.
A groundbreaking therapy
PRISM is the first and only FDA-cleared PTSD treatment of its kind.
Noninvasive & drug-free
PRISM uses advanced brainwave monitoring and real-time neurofeedback, without medication or invasive procedures.
Research-backed approach
Clinical studies show strong response and remission rates, with symptom relief that continues even after treatment ends.
Rapid results
Many patients experience improvement in PTSD symptoms within weeks of starting treatment.
PRISM treatment is currently available at only a limited number of clinics across the United States, and
Keta Medical Center is proud to be one of them.
How PRISM works
PRISM works by using advanced brainwave monitoring and real-time neurofeedback to help patients regulate their stress response.
During treatment, a noninvasive EEG headset measures brain activity linked to the area of the brain associated with the fight-flight-freeze response. Through guided neurofeedback training, patients learn to influence this activity. That’s how PRISM effectively retrains the brain’s stress response patterns to promote lasting relief.

What to expect from your first PRISM therapy session?
- Our team explains exactly how PRISM works and answers all of your questions.
- A comfortable, noninvasive EEG headset is fitted.
- Each session lasts about 30 minutes.
- No medication or special preparation is required.
- The session takes place in a calm, supportive setting.
- A computer screen shows a virtual waiting room filled with animated avatars.
- By using calming mental strategies such as recalling a peaceful memory you control the avatars to make them sit down and settle.
- A trained practitioner guides you throughout the session.
- Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately.
- No recovery time is required.
- The full program includes 15 sessions over 8 weeks.
- Some patients may benefit from booster sessions every 2–3 months.

Research
Below are several studies about the effectiveness of PRISM. The new technology is the subject of ongoing research.
FAQs
Yes. PRISM is FDA-cleared for PTSD and has undergone extensive clinical testing. It is a non-invasive, medication-free therapy that does not expose patients to thinking about their trauma during treatment.
EEG-fMRI Pattern (EFP) Biomarker was developed when researchers conducted simultaneous EEG and fMRI recordings to capture the brain’s electrical activity alongside detailed imaging data. By applying machine learning techniques, they established a model that predicts amygdala activity—typically measured by fMRI—using EEG signals. This model is termed the EEG-fMRI Pattern (EFP) biomarker. The EFP biomarker enables real-time assessment of amygdala activity through non-invasive EEG measurements, eliminating the need for continuous fMRI scanning.
PRISM was developed by GrayMatters Health, a pioneering company specializing in brain-based treatments for mental health disorders. In a technology developed by the company, advanced neuroscience is combined with real-time neurofeedback to treat PTSD. GrayMatters Health has received multiple prestigious awards for its innovation, including the 2024 Edison Gold Award, the 2021 Nature Spinoff Prize, and recognition as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in 2024.
PRISM is more advanced than traditional neurofeedback. Unlike standard neurofeedback, which provides general brainwave feedback, PRISM uses an innovative approach to specifically target the amygdala, the brain region associated with PTSD. It employs an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based neurofeedback system guided by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data.
PRISM is well-tolerated, with studies showing only mild and transient side effects that may include fatigue, headache, and scalp discomfort in a small percentage of patients. Most individuals complete the full treatment program without any issues.
Many patients experience noticeable improvements within weeks of starting PRISM therapy. Long-term benefits have been observed for months after treatment ends.
If you struggle with PTSD symptoms and have not fully responded to other treatments, PRISM may be a great option. Schedule a consultation with our doctors to discuss if it’s right for you.
Though FDA-cleared, PRISM is not yet covered by insurance. Each session costs $300.
No, PRISM does not require talking about or deliberately reliving traumatic memories; treatment uses an EEG headset and immersive visual feedback where you practice calming strategies to settle avatars, which trains emotional regulation without trauma exposure.
Many patients continue existing medications and psychotherapy while undergoing PRISM, since it is a noninvasive, medication‑free neurofeedback treatment. Please discuss your current medication and therapy plan with our clinical team so they can advise on any coordination needed.
PRISM is an FDA‑cleared, noninvasive neurofeedback therapy that trains you to self‑regulate amygdala activity using EEG‑guided exercises. EMDR and prolonged exposure are trauma‑focused psychotherapies that involve processing memories and emotions, and medications act systemically to alter brain chemistry.
PRISM does not require reliving or verbally processing traumatic memories and is a drug‑free option that targets stress‑response circuitry directly.
