Music Matters: The Power of Sounds for an Immersive Ketamine Journey

During ketamine therapy, the right music can have a powerful impact on your experience. Our therapist, Stacey Blume Frankel, weighs in.
Selecting the right music can help enhance the dissociative and introspective effects of ketamine, allowing for a deeper, more therapeutic experience. Focusing on music without any lyrics can also help promote a sense of ‘letting go’ and allow you to be guided into a relaxing state as you drift off.

If you are having trouble surrendering to the medicine and shutting off internal chatter, that is okay. It is normal to need some time to shift into a calmer mindset and that is why the music is there. The music is providing another point of focus that acts as guardrails for an immersive journey.

Music provides structure and continuity that helps you navigate the altered state more comfortably. Embracing the effects of the soft repetitive melodies and expansive sounds can be an extremely effective way to move through ketamine’s heightened awareness.

Overall, music provides a sense of support during this potentially transformative and profound treatment. We recommend tunes that have no words so patients are not unnecessarily distracted. Binaural beats, ambient soundscapes, classical music, and earthy nature sounds are popular choices for ketamine journeys. We have curated MUSIC playlists to choose from on a provided iPad at the Keta Medical Center offices.

Can I Bring My Own Playlist?

Patients can bring their own playlists, but we strongly discourage it. We don’t want you to be influenced by any lyrics and we don’t want you to try to control the auditory part of the journey for a handful of reasons:

Music can carry powerful associations, often tied to specific times, experiences, or people in our lives. These prior memories should be avoided, as they may not be relevant to the healing process. Ketamine treatments are designed to foster neuroplasticity, creating expansive shifts with new thoughts and new emotional responses. Music plays a key role in guiding this transformation into uncharted new territories, which is why we recommend selecting from our curated playlists on the provided iPad. This ensures that the music is free from prior associations and eliminates any sounds or words that could influence your experience.

Speaking of “words,” the iPad in Keta Medical Center’s office also offers guided meditations with positive affirmations such as “I am loved,” “I am safe,” “I am enough,” and “I am limitless.” These affirmations are powerful tools for rewiring the brain. However, if any of these themes resonate with you, we suggest listening to them AFTER your ketamine journey, during the relaxation phase, once the effects of the medicine have worn off. The intended effects of the Ketamine’s altered state of consciousness is meant to help get you in touch with YOUR OWN words–your own inner voice with healing messages.

Ketamine’s dissociative effects allow you to more easily connect with your inner healer—your subconscious mind. This is the intuitive part of yourself that holds wisdom you need for healing. By accessing this deep inner space of your own thoughts, you tap into your innate ability to heal, strengthening your intuition over time. As this inner voice becomes a trusted guide, it will lead you with increasing clarity and confidence.

Using our curated, word-free music playlists during ketamine treatments provides a better overall experience to navigate your inner landscape. Music can help reduce anxiety, promote neuroplasticity, and facilitate the emergence of your inner healer. We encourage journaling after ketamine to capture the experience and record your thoughts. Hopefully the music significantly contributes to an expansive journey that inspires deeper insights and meaning for more internalized and lasting healing.
